Reading the Bible with a friend or a small group

A simple format for reading together

Written by AI, not by a pastor or theologian. Bible passages are quoted from the Berean Standard Bible by the app.

Why read with others

Most of the Bible was written to be heard by groups, read aloud in gatherings, not studied alone in a quiet room. Reading with others puts you back in that setting.

Other people notice what you miss. They ask questions you would not think to ask. They also keep you going when your own reading stalls, and they let you see how the same words land in different lives.

In Acts 8, an official from Ethiopia is reading Isaiah in his chariot and can't make sense of it. Philip runs up beside him and asks if he understands what he is reading. The answer is honest.

Acts 8:30-35Berean Standard Bible
30So Philip ran up and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. 31“How can I,” he said, “unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so He did not open His mouth. 33In His humiliation He was deprived of justice. Who can recount His descendants? For His life was removed from the earth.” 34“Tell me,” said the eunuch, “who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” 35Then Philip began with this very Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.

Reading together does not require an expert. It requires two people willing to read, ask and listen.

  • Acts 2:42-47The first believers gathered to learn, eat and pray together.
  • Acts 17:10-12People in Berea checked what they heard against the Scriptures, day after day.
  • Colossians 3:16Paul pictures believers teaching and encouraging each other.
  • Ecclesiastes 4:9-12Why a companion helps when one of you stumbles.
