Psalms for every season

Twenty-six psalms sorted by what they give voice to

Written by AI, not by a pastor or theologian. Bible passages are quoted from the Berean Standard Bible by the app.

Why the Psalms sound like this

The book of Psalms is a collection of 150 songs and prayers. Israel sang them in worship, Jesus prayed them, and the church has used them ever since. They are the closest thing the Bible has to a prayer book.

People opening the Psalms for the first time are often surprised by how much complaining there is. Psalm after psalm asks God why he seems far away, how long the trouble will last, and whether he has forgotten. A large share of the book is lament.

That is a gift. It means the Bible itself gives you permission, and words, to bring grief, confusion and anger to God instead of hiding them. Lament is not the opposite of faith. It is what faith sounds like when life hurts: the person is still talking to God, even to object.

Here is one short lament in full. Watch how it moves. It starts with questions, turns to a request, and ends in trust, without telling us that the trouble has gone away.

Psalm 13:1-6Berean Standard Bible
1For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? 2How long must I wrestle in my soul, with sorrow in my heart each day? How long will my enemy dominate me? 3Consider me and respond, O LORD my God. Give light to my eyes, lest I sleep in death, 4lest my enemy say, “I have overcome him,” and my foes rejoice when I fall. 5But I have trusted in Your loving devotion; my heart will rejoice in Your salvation. 6I will sing to the LORD, for He has been good to me.

Not every lament ends this way. Some stay in the dark from first line to last, and they are in the Bible too.
